Remembering Roy Walling

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Mr. Roy Walling, a devoted and long-serving member of our Board. His leadership, wisdom and unwavering commitment have left a lasting impact on our organization and community. His presence will be greatly missed, and his legacy will continue to shape our organization for years to come.

Roy Elvis Walling, 96, of Shreveport, Louisiana, passed away April 9, 2026. Roy was born on January 19, 1930, in Oil City, Louisiana, to Dan and Loressie Walling. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior at First Christian Church in Oil City in 1943 and was baptized into Christ in Caddo Lake near the Ferry Lake Community. A man of faith, Roy remained active in church throughout his life and was a member of Westview Christian Church in Shreveport.

Roy attended Oil City Grammar and High School and graduated in 1947 before earning a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Louisiana Tech University. Roy proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, joining in 1948 and volunteering as a member of the 11th Airborne Division. During his military service, he completed jump school and was stationed at several bases across the country, ultimately achieving the rank of Sergeant First Class before his honorable discharge in 1952.

On July 23, 1953, Roy married the love of his life, Barbara Jean Arnold Walling. Together they built a life rooted in faith and family. Following his military service and college graduation, Roy built a distinguished career in accounting and finance. He worked for Arkansas Fuel Company before serving with the U.S. Air Force at England Air Force Base. He later worked with NASA at Ellington Air Force Base in Texas before returning to Louisiana, where he spent many years at Barksdale Air Force Base. There, he held several leadership roles, including Chief of Accounts Control, Deputy Accounting and Finance Officer, and Accounting and Finance Officer. Roy retired from civil service in 1989 after a remarkable career marked by integrity and excellence.

Never one to slow down, Roy began a second career as an independent home builder, helping shape neighborhoods throughout Blanchard, Bossier Parish and Shreveport.

Roy was also deeply committed to his community. He served for many years on the Board of Directors of Barksdale Federal Credit Union, holding leadership positions including president, vice president and secretary-treasurer. He maintained his position of accounting and finance officer on the Board of Directors until he passed. His thoughtful leadership and steady character earned the respect of all who worked with him.

Roy is preceded in death by his parents, Dan and Loressie Smith Walling, and his wife, Barbara Jean Walling. He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and John Chelette; nieces and nephews, Gene Boyter, Judy Tatum, Mike Chelette and Pam Chelette; great-niece, Allison McGinty; and several great nephews.
